Seikei drew the pictures for a four volume, woodblock-printed picture book entitled Shinsen Bunrin Gafu (i.e., Multiple New Designs Picture Album). Published in 1892, the book included many pictures of the Chinese “Four Gentlemen” (i.e., plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo). Ten examples from the plum, orchid and chrysanthemum volumes are shown here. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Seikei drew the shapes of his flower subjects accurately but he only colored them in shades of gray. To see more of Seikei’s pictures click here.
